About A Goat Named Joey

Joey ReadingAccording to a study by StopBullying.gov, 1 in 3 students in the United States says they have been bullied at school and 70% of students report having witnessed someone being bullied .Some say this is a normal part of childhood. I disagree. Mocking or harming someone—physically or emotionally—for being different, isn’t normal and shouldn’t be tolerated. A child who’s bullied is more prone to depression, anxiety, self-harm, violence, and suicide.

I was bullied in my youth. It was tough, but I got through it. When I was about to become a father, I began a story for my daughter called A Goat Named Joey, which tells the story of a goat who’s bullied for having an unusual name. Now, it’s for all three of my kids, who have inspired me to take on my new project. I want to turn this poem into a book to help all kids: the victims of bullying, those who witness it, and even the bullies themselves.

There are two central ideas to this book:

1) Follow the Golden Rule and treat others the way you wish to be treated

2) Become your own hero by believing in yourself.

We hope this book can become a tool for parents and educators to teach children how to overcome bullying. Every child has a unique light inside them, and if they can figure out how to make that light shine, they will not only survive the bullying, they’ll help others who are also struggling and begin to sow the seeds of a happy and fulfilling life.

How You Can Help

To publish this book, we need to raise around $20,000 through a Kickstarter campaign that will launch in October, National Bullying Prevention Month. This book can’t happen without the support of kind-hearted people who want to help kids learn in bully-free schools and who believe no child should be afraid to be who they are.

Help us make the world a better place one book at a time. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram, support the kickstarter campaign in October, and share this page to help us make a difference in the lives of children nationwide!
